SAIでは、2026年2月12日から3月1日まで、現代美術家・イチハラヒロコによる展覧会「幸せは目の前。」を開催します。イチハラは、言葉を素材に、日常に潜む感情やユーモアをポップにすくいあげる表現で知られています。
 
イチハラはこれまで、日常的な言葉を文脈から切り離し、空間に「イメージ（もの）」として展示することで、「言葉」そのものに焦点を当てた作品を発表し続けてきました。作品に現れるのは、詩的・抽象的な言葉ではなく、日常感覚に根ざした短い日本語のフレーズです。それらが壁一面に並ぶ光景は、SNSのタイムラインが空間に溶け込んだかのような軽やかさをまとっています。
 
簡潔なフレーズと均整の取れた文字組みや配置。印刷や複製の感覚を伴うシルクスクリーンの均質な質感は、広告の視覚言語を想起させます。日本語特有の曖昧さや空気感、婉曲表現を内包した言葉は、わかりやすい形へと還元され、SNSのポストのようにSAIの空間を流れていきます。そこには、無数に現れては消えていく言葉の氾濫と、情報に反射的に反応する現代の感情のあり方が浮かび上がります。
 
テキストと文体の軽やかさを反復し、文脈から切り離された言葉が視覚的快楽として立ち上がるこのスタイルは、コンセプチャルアートの旗手として言語を主要なメディアとして作品を発表してきたローレンス・ウィナーの手法とも重なります。同時に、日常に流通する記号をそのまま作品化するイチハラヒロコならではの感覚は、より広い文脈へと開かれているように思います。イチハラの作品で埋め尽くされたSAIの空間は、Xをスクロールしているかのような感覚を呼び起こし、広告や情報であふれる渋谷の風景を想起させます。誰もが公共に向けて言葉を発信できるようになった現在において、言葉は「伝えるもの」から「消費されるもの」へと変質しました。それでも感情を帯びた言葉はなお私たちを翻弄し、乾いた都市空間のなかで内的風景を映し出します。
 
本展では、1990年代より継続的に制作されてきたキャンバスにシルクスクリーンを施した作品群の中から約30点を展示するほか、イチハラヒロコの「恋みくじ」も設置します。絵画のように配置された言葉が漂流する空間のなかで、フィードに流れてきたお気に入りを保存するような感覚との出会いを、ぜひSAIでご体験ください。

SAI presents a solo exhibition ‘Happiness, Right There' by contemporary artist Hiroko Ichihara, from 12 February to 1 March 2026. Ichihara is known for her practice of using language as a medium, playfully drawing out the emotions and humour embedded in everyday life.
 
Ichihara has been presenting works that focus on the “word” itself by taking everyday words out of their context and exhibiting them as “images”in space. What appears in her works are not poetic or abstract words, but short Japanese phrases rooted in everyday sensations. When these phrases line the walls, the scene takes on a lightness evoking a social media timeline spilling into physical space.
 
The concise phrases, carefully balanced typography and spatial placement, and the uniform texture of silkscreen printing, with its sense of printing and reproduction, naturally imbue the visual language of advertising. Words that contain the ambiguity, atmosphere, and indirectness characteristic of the Japanese language are reduced to easily digestible forms and flow through the SAI space like social media posts.
 
The flood of words that appear and disappear in myriad forms, drifting contemporary emotions at the mercy of overflowing information. Repeating the lightness of text and tone, and allowing words detached from context to rise as a form of visual pleasure, this style resonates with the methods of Lawrence Weiner, a leading figure in conceptual art who has long treated language as a primary medium.
 
At the same time, Ichihara’s distinctive sensibility transforms the signs and symbols circulating in everyday life directly into artworks, expanding her practice onto a broader cultural landscape. Filled with Ichihara’s works, the SAI space evokes the sensation of scrolling through X, recalling the urban scenery of Shibuya saturated with advertisements and information. In an era when anyone can send out words to the public, language has shifted from something meant to communicate to something to be consumed. Still, emotion infused in words still plays with us, projecting the inner landscape in the dry urban space.
 
This exhibition presents approximately 30 works selected from Ichihara’s ongoing series of silkscreened canvases, produced continuously since the 1990s, along with the installation of her well-known Love Fortune (Koi-mikuji). We invite you to SAI to experience an encounter with the sensation of saving your favourites as they flow through your feed in a space where words are arranged like a painting and drift by.
