NUTS ARTWORKS:
WORKS SPEAKS ELOQUENTLY THAN LIPS!!!
2022  02.11 — 02.27

Overview

Naoto Hinai, the artisan behind NUTS ARTWORKS, has been fascinated with vintage American culture since childhood and has worked as a self-taught hand-painted sign maker since 1996. With every step of the production process created by hand, Hinai’s level of craftsmanship has earned him the trust of Tokyo’s Harajuku cultural scene, as well as brands and stores in various industries. Throughout his career, he has created shop signs and graphics for leading brands, including SUPREME, NEIGHBORHOOD, Ralph Lauren, and UNIQLO.

Hinai combines a deep knowledge of diverse and precise techniques with his own sense of originality to create works that are both innovative, traditional and imbued with the ability to traverse national borders. With a stoic dedication to craftsmanship, his timeless works continue to evolve, transcending the realm of art and continuing to attract a following amongst the figures who have shaped Tokyo’s street culture.

The exhibition features all new works. The title, ‘WORKS SPEAK ELOQUENTLY THAN LIPS !!!’, provides a literal expression of Hinai’s philosophy towards his art, allowing visitors to experience first-hand the artist’ s indomitable ideology.

One of the exhibition's highlights is a series of large, heavy two-dimensional works that incorporate 'chipping,' a technique used in glass signage to create patterns by randomly breaking the glass. The technique has been used since the mid-1800s and passed down through generations. Hinai has always been attracted to this traditional technique since he first came across it when exploring the possibilities of sign painting. After much trial and error, he has succeeded in incorporating it into his style. The exhibition will also include a three-dimensional sculpture, a career first for the artist. Silkscreen posters and postcards that coincide with the exhibition will also be available for purchase.
