Ryuichi Ishikawa:
The Inside of Life
2021  03.20 — 04.18

Overview

Born in 1984. Ishikawa met photography in his student days, and up until now, he has been working on his photographic creation based in his hometown Okinawa.

His photobooks; ‘a picturesque polyphony’ and ‘Okinawan Portraits 2010 - 2012’ , which feature a collection of snapshots in Okinawan scenery and portraits of Okinawan people, won the 40th Kimura Ihei Award in 2014.

Following 'CAMP’ published in 2016, the exhibition 'The Inside of Life' will present 42 new photographic works that were taken at a mountain by Ishikawa during his stay there. Since his past portrait series, Ishikawa has been consistently facing the theme of life. As he experiences living in all kinds of the harsh but beautiful natural environment which are different from our human society, he remarks that the boundary between him and nature, in other words, inside and outside, becomes blurred. The collection of artworks found out through such experience will sublimate the power to move beyond the connection and logic embedded in our lives, and give us a quiet impact as a new way of thinking.

The beauty seemed perfect,
I felt the sensation and emotion, which I cannot understand logically, came from here.
As touching inside nature, and recalling its magnificent power,
the distinction between things becomes to be connected by gradual gradation,
I feel that I am also part of the cycle.
