Joseph Beuys:
BEUYS Posters 2021
2021  01.19 — 02.14

Overview

For Joseph Beuys, who was in his quest for breaking the conventional framework of art and sought to communicate his thoughts and visions of society through his practice, the poster was not a by-product derived from the creation of the work of art, but a vital medium as his work of art. He insisted that every human being is an artist, and through his practice, he attempted to break the myth of the artist as a sacred individual who creates a work of art.

For him, the concept of art indicates the entire process of constructing a new society by utilizing the creativity which every human being owns. Thus, his definition of art was not only paintings or sculptures but also political activities.

Beuys established Free International University (FIU) and ran for elections representing the Green Party by calling for the realization of direct democracy. At the same time, as a part of his artwork, he actively organized the social meeting for the public to participate in discussions, actions, and appeals. And, his philosophy of a new concept of art resulted in a wide range of artworks such as drawings, multiples, actions, and posters.

Since the poster production involves a collaborative process, i t was a symbolic act for him to break the conventional view of the art. He had never given fine instruction to his co-workers, most of the decisions taken in both designing and p rinting were put into their hands. As a result, he created more than 290 posters in his entire career.

He also found a strong potential in posters as a medium to show his political assertion and to pose questions for the wider public. It was an ideal tool for him to accomplish the mass distribution of his ideas and to make the reader envision more than what was manifested in it.

There were the images of Beuys printed in more than one-third o f the posters, which gave a strong impression of the artist, and it contributed to e stablishing his charisma. Shugo and Shingo Ito, the founders of Kiyosato Museum of Contem porary Art (permanently closed in 2014), were among prominent as well as passionate collectors of Joseph Beuys. The exhibition will mark a recent acquisition of more than 130 posters and numerous books of Joseph Beuys from the Ito Collection.

Beuys Posters 2021 will be accompanied by other works by the artist and collaborator of Beuys such as Blinky Palermo, Gerhard Richter, and John Cage. While Beuys played an influential role as a professor at Düsseldorf Art Academy, he was also influential in the contemporary global art scene, and he collaborated with artists who were involved in the art movement such as Fluxus, an international performance collective.
