I grew up on a housing estate in the suburb of Tokyo.
A row of square concrete houses of the same shape lined up in the same scenery.
On clear sunny days, these houses blinded my eyes with dazzling white reflection.
A neat white space where there seems to be nothing else.
From there, I could go anywhere I wanted by train or car.
Likewise, I could become anyone I wanted. So everything I saw with my famil y was part of myhome.
Now I am far away from there and looking at the picture of my hometown.
Even though I can see myself in these pictures, I barely recognise these places.
Where did my hometown go?
I am trying to find the clues out of the pile of family photos.
 
― PUGMENT
 
The fashion label "PUGMENT" started their creative endeavors back in 2017. Since the beginning of their careers, many of PUGMENT's work have been focusing on the careful observation of the history of Japanese fashion culture, as well as the relations between the contemporary life, people and social milieu, and they have been making experimental showcases every season. The exhibition 'Almost heaven', a collection of their new pieces, invites us to the trajectory of their creative passage.
 
The visual inspiration of the SS2021 collection comes from a body of photographs taken since 1990, the year PUGMENT members were born, up until today. These are photos from a family album which were handed down from their family members, mostly taken during trips or events, some by a lake, other at an aquarium, on a boat, and on grassland. The PUGMENT members are plainly shown in most images, which certainly indicate that they were there at that time. Yet, most of them have disappeare d from their memory, thus they cannot remember it as their own experience. PUGMENT cut the shape of clothing patterns out from these photos, and sewed them with ot her parts. They carefully looked into details that they had unawared in a single image, and verbalised each of them.Through this process, they sought their hometown out of the time and space which they had gone through. 'Almost heaven' stands as a different scenery within us, arousing our personal feeling, but also indicating a pause of time which separates us from the great flow of time.
 
Although time never stops actually. This universal concept of time just flows constantly and many of it remains as vague memories within us. Strangely enough, we sometimes evoke a transiently odd but special feeling within our frainted experience of fragmented memory, especially at uncertain times today.The exhibition ‘Almost heaven’ , which can be perceived in relation to an intermedia art, attempts to reconstruct such a transient perception in the form of our essential equipment, the clothing. PUGMENT is coming into the limelight, not only on the fashion scene but also on the art scene due to the conceptual framework of their creative process . In this exhibition, we will present not only the SS2021 collections, but also an installation of artworks derived from it. There will be the sale of the SS2021 line-up as well as books released in the past.

東京郊外の団地で育った。
コンクリートの四角い同じ形の家がならぶ光景。晴れた日は真っ白にまぶしく映った。
それ以外に何もないと思えるほど、整った白い場所。
そこから電車や車に乗ってどこへでも行けた。それと同じように、何にでもなれた。
だから、家族と一緒に見たものすべてが私の故郷になった。
今はずっと遠い場所にいて、それを収めた写真を見ている。
そこに私が写っているのに、まったく新しく見える景色。
いったい故郷はどこにあるのだろう？
私は、写真の山からその手がかりを見つけ出そうとしている。
 
― PUGMENT
 
ファッションレーベル「PUGMENT」は2017年より創作活動を開始。過去よりある洋服へ対する国内服飾文化や、現代の生活や環境、社会の繋がりからテーマを用いて深く掘り下げ、毎シーズン実験的発表を行ってきました。「Almost heaven」というタイトルに添い新作コレクションで構成される本展覧会もまた、PUGMENTによる、まるで我々に寄り添うような創作活動の軌跡と対面することのできるエキシビションになります。
 
本コレクションは、彼らが生まれた1990年から現在までの写真をモチーフとしています。それらは家族から送られたアルバムの写真であり、湖や水族館、船の上、草原など、旅行や行事の際に撮影されたものが中心となり、そのほとんどの写真には彼ら自身が写っていて、確かに自らがそこに居たことを示します。しかし、そのほとんどは彼らの記憶から消え去ってしまっており、そのことを自らの体験として思い出すことが出来ない。PUGMENTはそれらの写真を、衣服の型紙の形に切り抜いて他のパーツと縫い合わせました。制作過程で写真の一部を切り抜いたとき、一枚の写真では気づかなかった細部に意識が及ぶようになり、そのひとつひとつに視点を留め言葉にすることで、彼らは確かに自らが生まれ巡ってきた時空間から故郷を模索します。バラバラになった写真からなる風景の寄せ集まりのように形成された衣服からは、元の像を見ることは叶いません。それは大きな時間の流れから切り離された個人的な、しかし普遍的な小間切れの時間として、私たちの中に別の景色として立ちあがります。
 
止まる事を知らない時間。誰しもに共通するこの概念は、ただただ流れるばかりで、その多くは我々にとって漠然な記憶として脳内に残ります。しかし、これまでの当たり前の生活に多くの変化が起きている現代にとって、そんな今この瞬間とも通じる確かでありなが証拠のない記憶の断片に、どこか儚いながら特別な力をみる感覚を持つことがあります。展示空間を覆う、そんな些細でありながらも潜在する力が再構築され、我々の欠かせない洋服の形へと視覚化された作品群は、一種のインターメディア的アートピースの側面も感じることができます。また、その無二なビジュアルと同時に、いたずらに過ぎていくものだった記憶の刹那が、創作によりと変化していく過程。我々はそれを前にして、内包する豊かさを認識するでしょう。
 
ファッションシーンのみならず、現在ではそのコンセプチュアルな制作のマインドがアートシーンでも大きな注目を集めているPUGMENT。本展覧会は、新作コレクションの展示·受注販売に合わせ、コンセプトより派生したアートワークの展示、過去リリースされた書籍等の販売も行いました。
